Board of Education Candiates

Board of Education Petitions now available to the Public
for the May 20, 2025 Budget Vote and Board Election

Candidate Petitions for members of the community wishing to run for a seat on the Board of Education are now available to the public.

All potential Candidates must fill out basic information with District Clerk Kristen Lopez in order to receive a petition.

Candidate Petitions are available to the public between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm at District Office, 150 Pike Street, Port Jervis.

(Entrance and Parking for 150 Pike is via W. Broome Street. Parking Lot is last lot on the left side of the road, across from the car wash)

GENERAL INFORMATION:

There are three, 3-year term seats available for this election due to the expiration of seat terms originally held by Annie Foster, William Harris, and Michael Hockenberry.

There is also one, 1-year term seat available to serve the last year of the term of William Onofry.

 

Completed Petitions must be returned to the District Clerk NO LATER THAN 5:00 pm on Wednesday, APRIL 30, 2025 to be placed on the ballot for the May 20, 2025 Vote.

The three candidates with the highest number of votes will receive three-year terms. The fourth highest candidate will receive a one-year term.

Voter Information

WHO IS A QUALIFIED VOTER?

You are qualified to vote in your school district election if you are:

  • A citizen of the United States; and
  • At least 18 years of age; and
  • A resident of our school district for at least 30 days preceding the vote

HOW DO I REGISTER TO VOTE IN THE UPCOMING SCHOOL ELECTION?

Port Jervis City School District has declared April 30, 2025 Voter Registration Day
If you meet the criteria (above), and would like to register to vote, please report between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm to the District Clerk's Office, located in the Administration Office, located at 150 Pike Street.  The entrance to the office is located in the bck of the building, parking via West Broome Street across from the car wash. 

Any person who did not register for the preceding general election is welcome to register.
If you DID register for the preceding election but resided in a district other than Port Jervis City School District, then you must re-register with the new address.

APPLICATION FOR ABSENTEE BALLOT OR EARLY MAIL VOTING BALLOT FOR THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT ELECTION

Who may apply for an absentee ballot/early mail voting ballot (emvb)? Each person must apply for the absentee ballot/emvb themselves. It is a felony to make a false statement in an application for an absentee ballot/emvb, to attempt to cast an illegal ballot, or to help anyone to cast an illegal ballot. If you are unable to sign your absentee ballot/emvb application due to certain conditions, please see the reverse side of the PJCSD Absentee Ballot Application for instructions. Completed applications must be retrived by the District Clerk prior to the ballot being mailed to you.

There are three ways to fill out the application:

  1. You can download and print the application for an absentee ballot;
  2. You can call Kristen Lopez, District Clerk at (845) 858-3100, ext. 5511 and ask to have it mailed to you; or
  3. You can visit the District Clerk’s Office at the Administration Building, located at 150 Pike Street, Port Jervis to fill it out in person.

*If you have a permanent illness or disability and are identified as a permanently disabled voter by the county Board of Elections, you do not have to apply for an absentee ballot - you will automatically receive a ballot for each election in which you are eligible to vote, without having to apply again.

WHEN IS THE APPLICATION DUE?

Requests to receive an absentee ballot/emvb by mail must be received by the district no later than seven days before the election. You may continue to pick up absentee ballots/emvb in-person up to the day before the election. 2024 ballots will be mailed out during the second week of May.

HOW TO CAST A BALLOT

  1. Once your receive the ballot, mark the ballot according to your choices for each office following the instructions on the ballot
  2. Once you have completed marking your ballot, fold it up and place it in the Security Envelope. (This envelope will have a place for your voter information & signature)
  3. Sign and date the outside of the back of the Security Envelope.
  4. Seal the Security Envelope.
  5. Place the Security Envelope in the Return Envelope. (This envelope will have the return address of the District Clerk and a logo that reads “Election Material, Please Expedite”)
  6. Seal the Return Envelope.

HOW TO RETURN YOUR COMPLETED BALLOT

When returning your completed absentee ballot to the District Clerk, use one of these three options:

  1. Return it by mail*
  2. Drop the completed ballot in one of our secure collection boxes (see locations & times below); or 
  3. Deliver it in-person to the District Clerk’s Office (150 Pike Street) between 7:30 am & 4 pm.  

*Postal Delivery time consideration when requesting an application for a Ballot or returning a completed Ballot:  If asking to have your application mailed to you, or If choosing to mail back your completed ballot, keep in mind that there have been widespread reports of delays of mail service by the USPS, which may result in you receiving your application late or your completed ballot not being returned by the deadline.  Please note that the district is not responsible for ballots not being included in the vote tally due to mail service delays.
