Overview of Revised COVID-19 Protocols (Effective March 2, 2022)

Isolation

Definition: 

  • Isolation results when one tests positive for COVID-19
    • Day 0 is the date of first symptom(s) OR test administration

Isolation Period Requirements: 

  • Must isolate for days 0-5
  • May return to school if:
    • Symptoms are improving
    • Fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication
    • No nausea, vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours
    • Does not have a productive cough
    • Cleared by school nurse

Masking Requirement

  • Students and school personnel must wear masks on return to school during Days 6-10 of the isolation period.

Exposure to COVID-19 (Close contact)

Definition: 

  • Exposure / Close Contact is defined as being within six (6) feet or less with an infected individual for longer than fifteen (15) minutes over a 24 hour period*
    • If both the infected person and the exposed person “correctly and consistently wore well-fitting masks close contact is three (3) feet or less

Requirements: 

  • Daily self-monitoring for symptoms
    • Asymptomatic close contacts can continue to attend school and participate in extracurricular activities

Recommendations for Masking and Testing from NYS Department of Health (DOH)

  • NYS Department of Health recommends that exposed individuals wear masks for Days 1-10 following exposure 
    • Day 0 is the last date of exposure to the infected person
    • This is a NYS DOH recommendation.  Masking will remain optional for exposed individuals in the Port Jervis City School District
  • NYS Department of Health recommends that individuals that are determined to be close contacts/exposed test for COVID-19 
    • “Immediately upon learning of the exposure or potential exposure”
    • “Daily, every other day, or at least within 5 days” of exposure or potential exposure

Symptomatic Individuals

  • Symptomatic individuals should stay home until symptoms resolve, five (5) days OR until tested
    • Positive test result - Isolate for five (5) days; Wear mask in school for Days 6-10
    • Negative test result - Return to school after completing the Attestation Form
