Student Privacy and Disclosure Information (FERPA)

Access to student records

The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, guarantees parents and eligible students over 18 the right to inspect and review educational records.

Release of student information to media

Also in accordance with FERPA, the Port Jervis City School District may disseminate the following student directory information: name, age, grade level, participation in officially-recognized activities and sports, weight and height (if member of athletic team), honors and awards received, and photograph. The information may be disseminated in a press release to print or broadcast media, or it may appear in district publications, broadcasts, web site or social media sites.

If you do not want your child's photograph or other identifiable information disseminated, you must make a specific request in writing by the second week of school to:

Mike Rydell, Superintendent of Schools
Port Jervis City School District
P.O. Box 1104
Port Jervis, NY 12771-1104

Failure to make such a request shall be deemed a consent to release or publish the aforementioned information during the school year.

Participation in Surveys

To ensure student privacy, the school district will offer parents the opportunity to opt their child out of participating in any survey that reveals information on certain types of personal behavior or political beliefs. Parents will also be notified of, and given the opportunity to exclude their child from, any activities in which personal information will be gathered from students for marketing purposes.
