Bus Rules & Regulations

The District considers the school bus an "extension" of the classroom. To ensure the safety of everyone riding on the bus, students should conduct themselves according to the established standards of classroom behavior. Parents are asked to help bus drivers maintain safety and order by reviewing the Bus Rules and Regulations with their children.

Changes to Bus Routes

Requests to change assigned bus routes must be approved by your child's principal. Learn more about Bus Change Request

Kindergarten and 1st Grade Bus Policy

District policy mandates that kindergarten and first grade students must be put on and taken off the bus by a parent/guardian or responsible individual authorized by the parent/guardian in writing.

If you are unable to be at the stop to take your kindergarden and first grade child off the bus, we need to know who is authorized by you to meet your child. Please complete the bus permission form and return it to the Transportation Department or School Office as soon as possible.

Late Buses

The District offers a late bus run for High School and Middle School students who participate in eligible after-school activities. Students who want to ride the late bus must receive permission in advance from a building administrator. All late buses depart from the High School at approximately 3:55 p.m. Middle School students are transported to the High School at 3:35 p.m.  Additionally, beginning September 4, 2019, bus runs will also depart the Middle School at 5:15 p.m. and the High School at 5:30 p.m.  The late buses do not make all regularly-assigned stops.

Private School Transportation

By law, all school districts in New York State must provide transportation to students enrolled in private schools who live within a 15-mile radius of the school they attend. To qualify, students in grades K-8 must live more than two miles from their school; students in grades 9-12 must live more than three miles from their school. Parents seeking transportation for their children to a non-public school for the 2020-2021 school year must submit a Transportation Request to a Private School by April 1, 2020. New students must file the request within 30 days of moving to the district.

Quality Bus Service transports students enrolled in private school in accordance with the district's calendar and policy. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to school on days the Port Jervis School District is not in session. This includes in-service days.
