World of Warfare I

HS Credit Value: ½ Credit / Half Year Course
Grade Levels: 10, 11, & 12

Course Description:

This course will examine the tactics, battle formations, weapons, and evolution of formations throughout Ancient History (Prehistory-1000 AD). No Prerequisite. Grades will be determined by tests, quizzes, essays, and group projects. 

  • Pre-History - This is the time prior to 4500 BCE, it had to start somewhere.  We will look at the evolution of villages, cities, and housing as a response to the development of weapons and warlike behavior.
  • The Egyptians - Was their kingdom built on knowledge alone?  Or was there something more sinister at work?  Maybe the saying should be...march like an Egyptian.
  • Ancient Persians - The real first super power.  How did they do it?  When and why did it fall apart?
  • Ancient Greeks - Starting with the time of the Iliad and tracing the changes in warfare through the time of Sparta, Athens, and Macedonia (A.T.G.).  Taking a long look at the different incarnations of the phalanx over the course of that time period.
  • Ancient Romans - We will examine whether the Romans were copy-cats of Alexander or blazing their own trail during the time of Roman expansion.
  • The Vikings - Talk about flash in the pan.  They ravaged the Old World for 300 years and disappeared.  Were they big bullies or was there a method behind the madness?
