Community Letter - Tragedy in Texas

Community Letter - Tragedy in Texas

Port Jervis Learning Community,

We are all attempting to process the senseless violence and loss of innocent lives across our country, most recently yesterday afternoon in an elementary school in Texas. There are understandably more questions than answers. There will continue to be extensive media coverage as details become made available to provide some answers. However, many will remain unanswered as there is no explanation or way to reconcile with such unimaginable acts.

This ongoing media coverage along with the struggle to process this information will naturally result in questions and concerns from our children. Port Jervis City School District has school counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists in each school building available to provide the support and guidance for all who need it.

Additionally, there are resources available to provide insight and information that may be helpful in communicating with your child:

"Helping Students After A School Shooting"

"How To Talk To Children About Shootings; An Age by Age Guide"

"Helping your children manage distress in the aftermath of a shooting"

"Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers"

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school or my office if we can be of any assistance during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Mike Rydell
