Port Jervis Learning Community,
I am writing this letter to the community to provide general information regarding a medical emergency that took place at the High School this afternoon, as well as a more specific outcome that one might consider.
Regarding the medical emergency, a student was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Police officers from our local agencies, as well as New York State Police responded to assist with the student and begin an investigation as to the reason for the medical emergency. The first responders along with our school personnel did an outstanding job responding and reacting. In compliance with privacy laws, school personnel do not have further details at this time. We will continue to be in contact with the family of the student to provide any support and services that might be needed. As stated, we do not have more specific information or a cause for the medical emergency.
However, as a parent of teenagers coupled with my role as an educator, I feel the need to share my initial thoughts that followed my experience at the High School this afternoon. Incidents, known or unknown in origin, provide the opportunity for classroom teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents to have that dialogue with our students/children about the dangers of inhaling or consuming, i.e. drinking or eating, any unknown substance. There are many products that are alarmingly widely available that allow for mixing of substances and ingredients. This presents our young adults with potentially dangerous and even devastating risks to their safety and well-being. These risks are completely avoidable and this is the reason for this message. While I know that every parent and educator is well aware of all of this information and shares the same concern, I felt the need to write this letter on this particular day with the ambition that perhaps it would lead to a dialogue in a classroom or home that otherwise would not have happened. Perhaps that conversation would prevent one from making a dangerously wrong decision at some point in the future.
Please know that our District has an outstanding team of social workers and school counselors that are committed to providing our students and their families with the support and services needed during this very pivotal time in their lives.
Thank you,
Mike Rydell
