Port Jervis Middle School Summer Academy 2021 

PJMS Summer Academy sign ups are now open! If you are interested in participating in the 2021 Summer Academy please contact the PJMS Guidance Office at 845-858-3100 ext. 12601. Summer Academy is available for students entering 7th or 8th grade in the 2021-2022 school year. Course information is listed below. Space is limited.

Social Studies - A History Walking Tour of Port Jervis 

Grades 7 & 8 
2 offerings (same tour): July 12-15 or August 2-6 
8:00am - 12:00pm 
Teacher: Kelly Decker 
Max 15 students 

Students will participate in a guided tour of our historic city. We will begin each day at PJMS near the tennis courts. Each day we will visit local sites throughout the city on foot (please wear comfortable shoes for walking). Students will gather facts and research historical sites from the first Dutch settlement, American Revolution, D&H Canal, a new village, Erie Railroad, our Civil War involvement on through to a booming young city. Students will create a “route” and Touring Booklet for others to enjoy. 


STEM - Agriculture and Art

Grades 7 & 8 
July 19-23 
9:00am - 11:00am

Max 20 students 

Students will use art to express agricultural topics which enhance their skills and knowledge. Students will complete projects in areas such as pollination and bees, soil art, seed mosaic art, and wool felting. 


STEM - A Variety of Topics & Projects 

Grades 7 & 8

Middle school is a critical time for students as many begin to consider possible career options. With many STEM careers on the rise, providing positive STEM experiences will help encourage and excite students down this path. Activities will increase students' critical thinking, communication skills, and inquiry skills. 

During this summer program students will explore various STEM topics. Topics will include items such as (but not limited to): 

-Exploring with Little Bits 

-Build a Mousetrap Car 

-Build/Design a 2 wheel balloon car to race 

-Build/Design a solar cooker 

-Awesome experiments 

 


Character Education - Welcome to Port Jervis Middle School 

Grade 7 
August 17-19 
9:00am - 11:00am

Current 6th graders are invited to explore and learn the ins & outs of Port Jervis Middle School. Students will view a sample class schedule, tour the building, learn to open a locker and learn all about the school including PJMS clubs, activities and fun events.


Math - Algebra Bootcamp

To be held in July for students who are accepted into the 8th grade Algebra class. A Google Classroom will be created for these students with details updated as soon as available.


Math - Geometry Bootcamp 

Date/Time TBD 

To be held in July for students who passed Algebra I. More information will be forthcoming.


Track & Field - Summer Speed Camp 

Grades 7 & 8 
July 13 - August 12 (Tuesdays & Thursdays only) 
9:00am - 10:30am 
Location: High School Track 
Teacher: Lou Puopolo 
Max 15 students 

The goal of the camp is to teach and develop track and field related skills for our youth athletes at the 7th & 8th Grade levels. 

  • Learn proper techniques and skills associated with track and field 
    • Running mechanics 
    • Starting techniques 
    • Jumping techniques 
    • Throwing technique 
    • Handoffs 
    • Hurdle technique 
  • Increase Strength and Power 
    • Plyometric training
