Letter From The Superintendent

June 3, 2020

Dear Port Jervis Learning Community,

Earlier this afternoon I posted on our District’s Facebook page a drawing I received from two of our elementary students via email.  Upon opening the email, the profound message and the emotions that have resulted from all that is happening around us became immediately tangible.  This artwork demonstrated the “want” and “need” that we strive to teach our students and the hopes that we all have for society as a whole.  These emotions led to the words associated with the post:  “There are times when a picture says far more than “a thousand words.” This artwork, created by two of Port Jervis’ student-artists, Emani and Michaela, is just such a picture. One community, one nation, one world - stand together, be there for each other, support each other.”

Throughout the school year, I have been repeatedly impressed and inspired by the tremendous acts of kindness, support, and caring that can be found throughout our school buildings each and every day. As I see the genuine good in our students and I witness all that our teachers and administrators do in the realms of character education and leadership ideals,  I am optimistic for the future.  I am committed to continue to ensure that the social and emotional welfare of our students is the top priority. Making sure each of our students feels that we as a learning community and as a community, in general, support and care for each of them.  Each individual is a valued and cherished member of something much larger.  We have amazing students and an exceptional faculty, staff, administration, and community - together we will make a difference at a time when a difference is needed.  I am hopeful that these efforts will have an impact so that our society as a whole will heal, grow, and truly represent all that is captured in Emani and Michaela’s picture.

Sincerely,

Mike Rydell

Superintendent of Schools
