Dear PJ School Community,
Good afternoon. The students voted today on the new school team name. The top three choices were (in alphabetical order):
Rail Riders, Red Hawks, and River Hawks with no choice garnering more than 50% of the vote.
Additionally, as we have gone through this required process, we heard from many alumni, staff, and community members about the concept of just remaining Port, Port Jervis, and PJ. We have seen several schools in the State do this and adjust to being called the name of the actual school and /or town. Here is an article about one of those schools.
This is what Shenendehowa Schools did, choosing just to be called Shen.
Next week, we celebrate the MLK holiday on Monday, 1/20/25. PJHS has mid-terms and Regents exams and will not be in regular session from Tuesday, 1/21/25 - Friday, 1/24/25. We will take this natural break to reflect on the vote results and further explore the possibility of taking no action, continuing to be called Port, Port Jervis, & PJ, and seeing what the future holds in and around New York State.
Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and recommendations, created logos, and expressed their love of the Port Jervis Schools and community. Also, thank you to all the students who took the time to vote today. It has been amazing to see, feel, and hear the #PortPride throughout!
More information to come soon. #GoPORT!
