Child Passenger Safety Week Car Seat Check

Join the City of Port Jervis Police Department in observing Child Passenger Safety Week, scheduled for September 21-27, 2025, and National Seat Check Saturday on September 27, 2025.

On Saturday, September 27th, Certified Child Passenger Safety Seat Technicians, Sgt. Nicole McGowan and Sgt. Tom Kimiecik from the Port Jervis Police Department will partner with certified technicians from the Town of Deerpark Police Department, Orange County Traffic Safety, and other law enforcement agencies in Orange County to host a FREE drive-thru child passenger safety seat check.

This event will take place from 10 AM to 2 PM at 31 Pike Street, located on the one-way section of Pike Street, near the intersection with King Street. During the event, technicians will check car seat installations, provide car seats to individuals who demonstrate financial hardship, and educate the public about the importance of child passenger safety.

According to the National Highway Safety Institute,

  • Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children 0-14 years old.
  • Studies have shown that parents and caregivers can be overconfident in their ability to select and install the right seats for their children; in fact, approximately half of all car seats are not correctly installed.
  • NHTSA urges parents and caregivers to double-check and make sure their children are in the right seats (rear-facing car seats, forward-facing car seats, or booster seats) and that the seats are installed correctly. “Good enough” may not be good enough in a crash.

Please stop by this free safety check event to have your car seat inspected and ensure that it is properly installed.

This program is partially funded through a grant obtained through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
