EME: Walking Trip

On Friday, June 13th, the second graders at East Main Elementary School had the opportunity to explore their community of Port Jervis.

Throughout the day, students visited the police department, fire department, recreation center, library, post office, M&T Bank, the ambulance corps, and finally, Ben's Fresh.

We would like to extend a special shout-out to Chief Worden, Sergeant Dillinger, Officer Decker, Sergeant McGowan, and the entire Port Jervis Police Department for escorting us to our destinations, helping us cross intersections, opening their doors to us, showing students various equipment, handing out goodie bags, letting the kids speak to dispatch over the radio—and most importantly, for keeping everyone safe ALL DAY LONG.

We also want to express our sincere thanks to all the other community members who helped make this trip a success:

  • Ms. James from M&T Bank, who gave each student a drawstring bag and explained how banks work and why saving money is important. Thank you also for your patience with the many questions about bank robberies!
  • Mr. Faggione, who opened the Port Jervis Recreation Center just for our students. They were extremely excited to learn about all the FREE and fun events happening this summer.
  • Ms. Treuting, who taught the students about the library and how to get a library card.
  • Danielle Glynn and her EMT team, who brought an ambulance over and explained CPR and the equipment they use to save lives.
  • Postmaster Schumann, who gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at the post office.
  • Chief Brown, David Moore, David Moore Jr., and the entire Delaware Engine Company #2, who welcomed the students into the firehouse, let them climb inside a fire truck, and taught them about fire safety.
  • A delicious thank you to Ben's Fresh for serving us ice cream at lightning speed!

Finally, thank you to our school administration for supporting this meaningful opportunity for students to connect with their community.

We are so grateful to work in a town that is caring, supportive, and deeply committed to our students.
