Fourth grader, Ian Thompson, has always loved weather and wants to be a meteorologist when he grows up. Ian started out the school year doing the Weekend Weather Report over the announcements for all staff and students. Ian had an idea to create a “Weather Week” as a way to thank meteorologists for saving lives. His goal was to have students learn and become excited about weather, as well as to inspire other kids to become meteorologists. In order to get his plan into motion, Ian created an outline, wrote up a proposal, and requested a meeting with ASK’s principal, Brett Cancredi. Once the proposal was approved, he began meeting before school, as well as during his lunch and recess. Ian’s ideas and enthusiasm were shared with The Weather Channel who recognized his passion and spirit and, in turn, wanted to support him. They sent Ian an official Weather Channel field jacket, a t-shirt, and an autographed photograph. On Friday, May 10th, Ian and his class had the opportunity to skype with Reynolds Wolf, a meteorologist from the Weather Channel. The students got to speak with Mr. Wolf, ask questions, and got first-hand footage of the current flooding in Houston, Texas. As an exciting end to Weather Week, the Weather Channel aired a montage of photos from Weather Week that was aired on May 12th. We are so proud of Ian and hope that Weather Week will be an annual event at ASK !
