John Stewart, Class of 1980

John Stewart’s first “Port” will always be Port Jervis. Upon graduating PJHS in 1980, Stewart attended the United States Naval Academy, earning his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering (‘84). His career in the U.S. Navy would involve the submarine service. Stewart completed initial nuclear power and submarine training prior to reporting to his first submarine. One of the highlights of his junior officer training was a transit from New London, Connecticut to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii via the North Pole. This transit included a surfacing at the pole. Stewart would serve as Engineer Officer aboard the USS Greenling, and then Executive Officer on the USS Augusta. He went on to serve in the Office of Secretary of the Navy. From 2002 - 2004, Stewart commanded the nuclear submarine USS Tennessee (SSBN-734). Later, Stewart made Deputy Squadron Commander, Submarine Squadrons 16 and 20, Kings Bay, GA. He was responsible for the oversight and certification of the 14 submarine crews homeported there. Stewart’s 26 years of service in the Navy prepared him for great success in the private sector. In 2009, Stewart was named Chief of Nuclear Safety Operations, at the National Security Complex, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He currently is President and General Manager of Babcock & Wilcox Shaw Remediation, LLC. He and his wife Lisa have five children and live in St. Augustine, FL.
