James Cain, Class of 1983

Heal. Teach. Discover. Serve. Dr. James Cain’s mission to improve healthcare has taken him worldwide. Lessons from Port Jervis about community, hard work and sacrifice shaped this pursuit. At the University of Scranton, Cain was selected for the University Honors Program, lettered in wrestling and earned his Bachelor’s. He earned his MD at the University of Pittsburgh, completed his Internship at Yale and Anesthesiology Residency and Fellowships in Critical Care and Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. Cain then served at Harvard and MGH as Instructor, Intensivist and Director of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. He was recruited to West Virginia University as Assistant Professor, Anesthesiologist, Intensivist and Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology Education. Cain currently serves the University of Pittsburgh and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as Associate Professor and Director of Perioperative Medical Services, Trauma Anesthesiology and Transplant Anesthesiology. Cain was two terms President of the West Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists, is Delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists and on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists and Wake Up Safe. He has traveled worldwide as two term President of the International Trauma Anesthesia and Critical Care Society. Cain is a frequent invited speaker, including more than a hundred international lectures and symposia. He was Editor-in-Chief of TraumaCare, sits on a dozen editorial boards, has authored numerous abstracts, publications, and invited articles as well as eighteen book chapters. Cain earned his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh and continues toward his PhD with current research focusing upon patient safety. Cain resides in Pittsburgh with wife Roberta and children James, Francesca, and Noelle.
