The course covers nonfiction works in American literature and numerous genres of American and British authors. Emphasis is placed on reading comprehension and written language skills. Students read and annotate complex texts and participate effectively in collaborative discussions. In addition, the students demonstrate a command of vocabulary, language, grammar and usage appropriate for career, trade school and college. The course is designed to meet the needs of the individual student and prepares students to perform effectively on the Regents Examination in English Language Arts (Common Core).
