PJHS: Painting II and IV Sculptures

Students in Mrs. Maloney's Painting II and IV classes created painted sculptures that originated from a core experience, concept, or emotion. The wall sculptures of Frank Stella, who is based in the Hudson Valley, were a source of inspiration since he is a master at asymmetrical balance. The only parameters set by Ms. Maloney were to use a limited color scheme and maintain asymmetrical balance. The rest of the project was up to the students to design and build. Students began with a series of sketches, followed by a small-scale model and then "dumpster dove" for cardboards of different textures and thickness to use for the base shapes. They experimented with different surface paint textures, using a comb, wire, glossy paint, spray paint, and 3-D paint and conducted multiple peer critiques, refining the sculptures through them with the goal of communicating the complexity of the human experience. Students then wrote descriptive blurbs to go along with their artwork and hung each piece in the high school library at a "gallery opening" where members of the high school community were invited to look at the work and hear from the artists.
