PJHS: The 37th ADAC Contest

The 37th Annual Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council of Orange County (ADAC) Substance Use Prevention Poster and 6th Annual Essay contest recently accepted submissions based on the theme: Team Up Together, Be Drug-Free Forever!

ADAC received just under 1500 poster submissions and just over 300 essays county-wide. Posters are submitted in both English and Spanish and can be digitally designed or hand drawn. The Port Jervis school district received three Grand Prizes this year!

Grand Prize, Spanish, Grades 7-12: Kaylee Makarenko

Grand Prize, Spanish, Digital Design, Grades 7-12: Gabrielle Polarski

And in memory of Lori Hulle, ADAC member Student Assistance Counselor at Washingtonville school district who was an integral part of the ADAC team and helped train hundreds of Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASACs) through ADAC’s School of Addiction Studies, the Lori Hulle Memorial Poster Award winner is Julia Elston.

Only in its second year of being awarded, this is the second time a PJHS student received this award!

Grand Prize posters are printed, reproduced with our sponsors’ names, and distributed to schools, offices, and businesses throughout Orange County. The students’ original artwork is custom framed by FCC Gallery in New Windsor and each Grand Prize student wins $200. All students who place are honored at a ceremony on Friday, May 10th at the Paramount Theater in Middletown. Each Grand Prize winner also receives an Outstanding Leadership/Volunteerism/Citizenship award from the Orange County Youth Bureau at their awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 5th at SUNY Orange.

The contest is ADAC’s largest prevention campaign, with participation from nearly all public and some private schools across Orange County. Port Jervis is the only district in which every art teacher participates, thanks to Art Department Chair Mrs. Horst. We are grateful for the continued support and participation in this contest.
