PJHS: Steering Convention

The High School Youth in Government Club recently traveled to Newburgh Free Academy to participate in the annual Steering Convention. 11 districts from across the county sent their clubs to this event which mimics the national conventions of our American political parties. Students run against each other for elected positions, ranging from county clerk to congressperson in an attempt to win their party's nomination. Students who wish to run must prepare and deliver a speech and campaign to garner votes and the winner from each party then records their speech for the general election. In January, all students in the 11 school districts will watch the videos and cast their vote in a general election. This year, Port Jervis had 8 students run for office with three being successful in gaining the nomination of their party. Congratulations to Yacine Niasse, who will be running for the office of NYS Attorney General and Avery Edwards, who will be running for the office of NYS Senator, both on the People's Party line and to repeat nominee and last year's gubernatorial winner, Noemie Florant, who will be running for NYS Governor on the Citizen's Party line.  If any of these ladies win the general election, they will spend a day in the Spring in Albany at the capital. Congratulations and best of luck in the general election!
