With the season of giving upon us, the Port Jervis High School spent the week of November 14th identifying, discussing, and exploring the concept of volunteering through service to the community. The week kicked off with administrators, counselors, social workers, and school psychologists presenting to high school social studies classes on the benefits of taking part in community service.
On November 17th, high school students participated in a building-wide assembly led by Christopher Holshek, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), founder of the National Service Ride project, Michael Bark of the Orange County Youth Bureau, and guest speakers from the Port Jervis Learning Community, Mr. Decker and Ms. Cassara. The unique backgrounds of all of the presenters contributed to an outstanding assembly in which the message of service through volunteering was highlighted. The following day, November 18th, representatives from over 20 local organizations met with students each period of the day to share the ways that they can volunteer and acquire community service experiences locally. The day was highlighted by several demonstrations in which our students were able to participate. Thank you to all that joined in to participate and embrace the importance of volunteering through service to the community. We look forward to the ongoing relationships between school and community!
