Safety Community Memo

Dear Port Jervis Middle School Parents, Students, and Staff:

I am writing to inform you that there were four knives confiscated this week at Port Jervis Middle School.  We share this information in the spirit of transparency and for the safety of all members of our school community.  Weapons of any kind are not permitted on school grounds at any time.

Additional points of information are:

  • There were no threats of violence regarding these weapons.
  • They were not brandished on anyone.  They were confiscated during routine checks.
  • All students who possessed these knives in school are being disciplined in accordance with the PJCSD code of conduct.

We continue to work closely with our staff and local law enforcement in our schools and community.

While I am concerned by these events, as I am sure you are, please know we will continue to be diligent in our safety procedures, visible in and outside of our schools, and enforce all measures of safety.  Jackets and bags must be stowed in lockers and cell phones are away for the day.  “If you see something or hear something, say something” is a mindset we will continue to foster with all students and staff.  Mrs. Cook and I will make ourselves available next week if you would like further conversation.

Yours in Port Pride,

Mr. Marotta

PJMS Principal
