PJMS Update: Nov 4th, 2022

Dear PJMS families:

I am writing to provide an update regarding a math substitute teacher and a situation that occurred on Friday, November 4, at Port Jervis Middle School.  On Thursday, November 3, we began receiving some reports from personnel who shared that students had reported that their substitute had touched them and/or made them feel uncomfortable because of how close he was to them while working with them on their math work.

With this information, we began an investigation that continued into Friday morning.  Student interviews contained statements such as:

  • He touched my arm.
  • He put his hand on my back.
  • He touched my leg.
  • He made me feel uncomfortable.
  • He was very close to me.

The students shared that while these actions were not sexual in nature, they did make them feel uncomfortable.  Early Friday morning, the substitute teacher was removed from the classroom and school.  He will no longer be working at the Port Jervis School District.

We are very disappointed to hear of these types of actions from the substitute staff member and proud of our students for speaking up for themselves and their classmates.  The well-being and safety of all our students is the most important thing in all the work we do.  While upset by this information and concerned for our students, we felt it very important to share with parents and families.

We will meet with all the classes who had this substitute to talk through this situation on Monday.  Mrs. Cook and I have spoken to most of the parents of the students who came forward.  If you would like to talk further with me, please email me and I will get back to you early next week.  Thank you.  Sending our best to you and your families.

Yours in Port Pride,

Mr. Marotta
