Summer Academy is available for students entering 7th or 8th grade in the 2022-2023 school year.
Course information is listed below. Space is limited.

Social Studies - A History Walking Tour of Port Jervis
Grades 7 & 8
Dates: (2 offerings, same tour): July 25-29 or August 9-13
Time: 8:30am - 10:30am
Teacher: Kelly Decker
Max 15 students
Students will participate in a guided tour of our historic city. We will meet each day at the PJHS student
parking lot. Students will visit local sites throughout the city on foot (please wear comfortable shoes
for walking). Students will learn about:
- The rich history of the area including the old mine road, the Revolutionary War attacks of Joseph
Brant and the Tory Raiders, Carpenter's Point, and our Civil War Veterans
- The History of the D&H Canal and the Erie Railroad
- The Architecture of buildings in the city as well as downtown and its construction and changes
- The history of the city watershed property and development of Elks Brox park
Character Education - Welcome to Port Jervis Middle School
Grade 7
Dates: August 15 & August 16
Time: 9:00am - 11:30am
Teacher: Megan Wieboldt
Current 6th graders are invited to explore and learn the ins & outs of Port Jervis Middle School.
Students will view a sample class schedule, learn to open a locker, how to stay organized in middle
school, and learn all about the school including PJMS clubs, activities, and fun events.
STEM - Agriculture and Art
Grades 7 & 8
Dates: July 5-8
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Teacher: Anna Penny & Megan Wieboldt
Max 25 students
Students will use art to express agricultural topics which enhance their skills and knowledge.
Students will complete projects in areas including but not limited to: wool felting, bird identification &
realistic drawings, 3-D flower pins, water marbling, cyanotypes, and sun printing.
Outdoor Education
Grades 7 & 8
Dates: August 4-8
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Teacher: Megan Wieboldt
Max 20 students
Students will work on a variety of outdoor education activities while gaining an appreciation for the
natural world around us. Brief topics will include but are not limited to wilderness survival skills,
orienteering and GPS, and outdoor cooking. This will give students an opportunity to “unplug” and
reconnect with nature.
Math - Algebra Boot Camp
Grade 8
Dates: July 18-21
Time: 8:30am - 10:30am
Teacher: Jessica Davis
The summer Algebra Boot Camp will be an introductory course for 8th grade accelerated students.
This course is limited to those students who are selected to take Algebra in the 2022-2023 school
year. This course will cover many of the important topics during the transition from 7th grade Math to
Algebra. The topics will include solving equations, solving inequalities, and more.
