"The Port Jervis Middle School National Junior Honor Society is an official chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The NJHS is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. According to the NJHS, “More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.” Membership in this chapter is open to all middle school students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Criteria for selection are established by the national council of NJHS and revised to meet local chapter needs. Students are selected by an anonymous five-member Faculty Council, appointed by the principal which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year.
At PJMS, in accordance with national standards set by NJHS, students will first qualify for an invitation through their demonstration of success in the area of scholarship. Students who have a cumulative grade of ninety (90%) are invited to complete an application packet which provides the Faculty Council with the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is required. Therefore, just because a student qualifies based on their cumulative average, does not mean they will automatically be inducted into the NJHS. After students fill out an information sheet and submit an application essay, applications will be reviewed anonymously by our Faculty Council (advisors are not allowed to serve on the Council). Additionally, PJMS staff members will offer feedback for the Council to consider.
Students who meet the established criteria will be selected to join the PJMS chapter of the NJHS. Members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection. Throughout the school year, members will take part in a variety of activities, both in the school and the community, that are in line with the foundational traits of the NJHS. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the PJMS principal, Mr. Marotta, or the Chapter Co-Advisors, Mrs. Wieboldt and Mrs. O’Connell."
