HBE: Big Apple Crunch

On Wednesday, October 29th, HBE and EME both participated in the annual BIG APPLE CRUNCH. Both schools bit into apples at the same time.

We want to thank Food Service Director, Erin Phelan, for getting every staff member and student in both elementary schools an apple. We also want to thank our High School volunteers who dressed up for us. A big thank you to Kevin Mesnick, Benson Cilius, Dylan Fox, and Robert Culleny.

Each year, participants from across the state are invited to take a bite out of an apple grown in New York. Hundreds of thousands of students at schools and college campuses statewide now join in every year. Last year, we saw over 2.3 million New Yorkers participate in the Big Apple Crunch.  The FarmOn! Foundation partners with local farmers across the apple belt of New York to try and dedicate bringing children closer to food and farming with healthy fun. This year, HBE and EME have teamed up to coordinate a CRUNCH to bring awareness during apple harvest and inspire people to EAT LOCAL with this pledge. We want to raise awareness about the importance of supporting our local New York farmers, creating better access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and making it more affordable to eat fresh, local food for our health and the environment.

Education starts with us. You can't learn if you're hungry. And you won't perform your best if your body isn't given the best fuel. By crunching into the apple, everyone took the pledge to make healthier food choices.
