TRANSPORTATION NEWS
Deadline for Non-Public School Transportation Requests:
April 1
Parents of students living
in the Port Jervis School District who are seeking transportation for
their children to a non-public school for the
2010-2011 school year must submit a written request for
transportation by April 1, 2010.
The request form can be obtained from the non-public school your
child attends or by
clicking here. The
completed application must be returned to Port Jervis
Transportation Office, P.O. Box 1101, Port Jervis, NY
12771. Please call 858-2150 if
you have questions or need additional information.
By law, all school districts in New York State must
provide transportation to students enrolled in non-public school
who live within a 15-mile radius of the school they attend. To
qualify, students in grades kindergarten through grade 8 must
live more than two miles from their school and students in
grades 9 to 12 must live more than three miles from their
school.
In order to obtain transportation for their children, parents
must file the written request with the Port Jervis School District by April
1 of the preceding year or within 30 days of moving to the
district.
Port bus drivers
conducted safety drills Dec. 2
Port Jervis students participated in bus safety drills
Wednesday. As required by the NY
State Education Department, students received instruction on how
to safely board and exit the bus using the emergency exits. They
were also being shown how to locate and use the bus first aid box,
fire extinguishers, and two-way radio. Bus drivers use the three
annual safety drills to review key safety rules. The next bus
safety drill will be held in the spring.

Half of Port's
student will be transported by Quality buses
District begins process of privatizing transportation
Approximately
2,600 students are transported daily to Port Jervis schools.
Beginning this year, half of the students are
transported by Quality Bus Service LLC - the private company contracted by the
district to provide transportation services.
Many Port Jervis families are already familiar with Quality Bus
since the company covered some routes last year. Quality Bus has
an exceptional safety record and exceeds state requirements for
equipment, driver history, criminal background checks, and
training.

Bus Rules and Regulations
The school district considers the school bus an "extension" of
the classroom. To ensure the safety of everyone riding on the
bus, students should conduct themselves according to the
established standards of classroom behavior. Parents are asked
to help bus drivers maintain safety and order by reviewing the
Bus Rules and Regulations with their children.

Bus Transportation Form for Kindergarten Students
The Port Jervis City School District Policy mandates that
kindergarten students must be put on and taken off the bus by a
parent/guardian or responsible individual authorized by the
parent/guardian in writing.
If you are unable to be at the stop to take your child off the
bus, we need to know who is authorized by you to meet your
child. Please complete this form and return it to the
Transportation Department or School Office as soon as possible.
This form must be received and processed by the Transportation
Office prior to permission being granted.

Changes to assigned bus route
•
One-time change
(Must be for five consecutive days)
Effective September 2009, the district will no longer approve
one-day changes to bus routes. The decision to prohibit students
from switching buses was made for safety reasons. Last year, the
number of same-day requests for afternoon bus changes reached
nearly 20 per day. This made it increasingly difficult for
transportation and school staff to track the whereabouts of
those who were switching buses. To ensure our students' safety,
the district must be accountable at all times for the
location of children using the school transportation system.
For this reason, all bus route assignments must be consistent.
In emergency situations - such as family illness or out
of town travel - parents can send a written request to change
their child's bus route for five or more consecutive days. The request
must be sent to the child's principal for approval. Two days
notice is required to allow proper processing of the request.
•
Permanent changes
If a child's bus assignment needs to change permanently - when
his or
her family moves to a new home, for instance, - the
child's school office
should be notified far in advance.
Permanent bus change requests take
at least three days to
process. The school office will notify a child's
parent(s) once
the change has been approved. Until the request is
processed,
children will not be permitted to ride on a new bus route.
Students who walk to school are not permitted to ride buses.
•
Childcare providers/Babysitters
Special arrangements can be made with the Transportation
Department to have your child picked up or dropped off from a
childcare
provider. In accordance with school district policies,
the arrangements
must be made for five days per week. No more
than three bus route
changes will be processed within one school
year. To download a
copy of the required request form,
Late buses
The school district offers a
late bus run for High School and Middle School students who
participate in eligible after-school activities. Students who
want to ride the late bus must receive permission in advance
from a building administrator. All late buses depart from the
High School at approximately 3:55 p.m. Middle School students
are transported to the High School at 3:30 p.m. The buses do not
make all regularly-assigned stops.
