Port Jervis School District joins the WeatherBugŪ Schools Network

WeatherBug Tracking Station providing live, local weather conditions for Port Jervis and enhancing education

POSTED: APRIL 13, 2010

WeatherBugŪ, the leading provider of live, local weather information, now has a tracking station in Port Jervis, NY.

A fully-automated tracking station was installed recently at Port Jervis High School – the latest school to join the WeatherBug’s national education network of 8,000 weather stations and over 1,000 cameras located at schools and public safety facilities across the United States.

Port Jervis and surrounding communities now have access to precise live weather information, relevant weather reports, and early weather warnings. Information on local climate conditions –including hourly and seven-day weather forecasts – can be accessed 24-hours/day on this web site by clicking the WeatherBugŪ logo on the district home page and all school pages.

The tracking station will also allow teachers, who now have access to weather data from WeatherBug sites across the country, to combine meteorology and technology in an interactive learning environment. Using WeatherBug’s interactive software program, teachers in grades K-12 will be able to apply real-world conditions to math, science, and geography lessons to create customized learning activities based on current and historical weather.

According to Port Jervis Middle School science teacher Padraic McCarthy, who helped bring WeatherBug to Port Jervis, one of the perks of the educational perks is the ability to integrate climate conditions and data into the classroom.

“This is a unique opportunity for our students to further their knowledge of meteorology and actually track our local weather conditions instead of just watching the forecast on television,” said McCarthy, who is now working with fellow Port Jervis teachers to train them how to use the weather tools to develop innovative lesson plans.
