First day of

Port Jervis students off to a good start...
 |
Port Jervis kicked
off a new academic year Sept. 2 with teachers and staff
welcoming more than 2,900 students back to school.
Opening day was marked
with excitement as students - particularly those in the
elementary schools - checked out their new classrooms, found
their cubbies, and got reacquainted with friends.
High School students returned to find many building improvements
- including refurbished gymnasiums, Library enhancements, six
new baseball/softball dugouts, and the addition of new wooden
benches in the school entrance where everyone gathers between
classes.
The most exciting thing about this year's opening day was that
for the first time since the No Child Left Behind legislation
was enacted in 2002 all Port Jervis schools - and the district -
are all in good standing with the New York State Department of
Education. This means that Port Jervis schools met
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on all of the required areas
for two consecutive years.
"Everyone in the district – from our
school board members, administrators, teachers and staff to our
parents and students – has worked together to turn our schools
around,” said Superintendent John Xanthis.
