Middle School Peer Leaders
Successful students help
sixth graders transition to middle school
POSTED: JUNE
24, 2009
How will I be successful once I enter the middle school?
This question was answered by a group of seventh and eighth
grade peer leaders over the past several weeks.
 |
It began with three days of
training, with the assistance of Barbara Cathy,
Bethany
Harget,
Kendra
Marshall, and Terence
McGuire, on how to present
an orientation program to the sixth grade classes. The peer
leaders spent time at the Youth Center in Port Jervis, where
they used technology to develop Powerpoint presentations on what
will be expected when the current sixth graders enter the middle
school in September.
Each peer leader group went to one elementary school sixth grade
class where they talked with the students, explaining about
"life in the middle school." They did whole group instruction,
as well as small group work. While in the smaller groups, the
peer leaders were able to talk one on one with the sixth graders
to address their concerns and questions about being a middle
schooler.
Each peer leader has been a success at the middle school, and
they were able to explain to the sixth graders what they did to
meet with their success.

A follow-up to their
presentations will be tours of the Middle School, given to each
of the sixth grade classes. These tours will take place during
the last week of school. The peer leaders will remain after the
school dismisses to show the sixth graders the layout of the
building.
When finished, each sixth grader will receive a brochure, which
gives some of the highlights and expectations of the Middle
School.
