School joins nationwide movement against
Big Tobacco
Port Jervis High School students

POSTED: MARCH 26, 2009
Port Jervis
High School partnered with the Orange County Health Department
and POW’R Against Tobacco March 25 to
empower students to speak out, stand up, and take action against
“Big Tobacco” on National Kick Butts Day.
The goal of the nationwide ant-smoking movement is twofold: to
help teens realize how they are being manipulated by “Big
Tobacco” companies and to show teens how lethal cigarette
products are to them and their community.
The Port
Jervis chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
worked with event organizers Assistant Principal Andrew Marotta
and POW’R Against Tobacco Orange County Coordinator Meghan
DuBois O’Connor to build excitement for the event through
decorations, flyers, t-shirts, and public service announcements
announcements.
Throughout
the day, students had the opportunity to participate in several
hands-on activities, including signing and writing personal
messages on an anti-smoking graffiti banner. The messages -
which included pledges to quit smoking - will be sent to tobacco
companies and businesses that accept tobacco ads.

The big
question of the day was "What does the number 72 represent?"
The number was everywhere - posted on the floors, walls, and on
t-shirts wore by event planners. The answer was provided at the
end of the day: someone dies in the United States every 72
seconds from a tobacco-related illness.
To show how many people are lost tragically every day to cancer
and other tobacco-related illnesses, a miniature crime-scene
body outline was placed in the hallway windows every 72 seconds.
When school let out, close to 250 miniature crime scene
silhouette cutouts covered the front hallway windows.
