Port Jervis High School Class of 2009 Graduation

In spite of the thundershowers that pelted the Mid-Hudson Valley less than two hours before the start of Friday night's graduation, the skies cleared just in time to allow Port Jervis High School to hold its traditional outdoor ceremony at Chase Field.

As the sun peaked through the clouds, the families, friends, and well-wishers filled the stadium to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2009.   

Speaking on behalf of the class, valedictorian Amanda Balch reminisced with her fellow graduates about their 13 years of schooling. "While it has always been important to study diligently, to understand the materials presented, and to earn decent grades, it is the lessons that could never be taught from any textbook that shall remain with us for the rest of our lives," said Balch.

Balch urged her 210 fellow graduates to use the lessons they've learned about commitment, hard work, character, and other valuable life-skills to achieve success. She also challenged her classmates to take advantage of every future opportunity. "I guarantee that 20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't try than by those that you did," she said. "Regardless of the outcome, positive or negative, you will still have learned something as a result of its occurrence...we will never stop learning."
