Superintendent John Xanthis was one of the many guests
who packed into Nicole DiCostanzo's third grade
classroom Nov. 20 to watch the students perform The
First Thanksgiving. |
The third graders in Nicole
DiCostanzo's class brought history to life by presenting their
own rendition of The First Thanksgiving. Dressed as
Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe, the Bicentennial
Elementary students entertained their parents and family members
with the story of the feast the Pilgrims held in the fall of
1621 to celebrate their first successful harvest.
The class spent more than three
weeks preparing for the play, which was the culminating activity
for their unit on the Pilgrims and Life in the Plymouth Colony.
"The students learned a great
deal about what it was like to sail on the Mayflower and live in
Colonial times," said teacher Nicole DiCostanzo, who has been
incorporating the play and other hands-on learning activities
into the social studies unit for the past six years.
