Superintendent comments
about bus tape
On July 1, a copy of a
surveillance tape from what was identified as a Port
Jervis School District bus aired on a local news
program. Prior to being contacted that afternoon by
the television station, Superintendent John Xanthis
did not know the tape existed. Since he had not seen
the tape and did not have time to validate that the
footage was taken on a Port Jervis bus, Xanthis was
unable to comment about the matter before the
broadcast. At no time did Xanthis refuse to view the
tape.
The Port Jervis School District is now investigating
the reporter’s allegation that an adult voice can be
heard on the tape using inappropriate language. “The
Port Jervis School District administration was
unaware of this particular bus tape until July 1.
Surveillance cameras were installed in our buses
last year as a means to promote discipline and to
provide a safe environment for our students.
Typically, the tapes are not viewed unless we
receive a specific complaint about a discipline
problem or safety violation. If a complaint is
received, specific procedures are followed regarding
the viewing of the tapes to safeguard the rights and
privacy of our students and employees,” said
Superintendent John Xanthis.
“The type of allegation made by the news reporter is
never taken lightly by the district. While we are
glad that these concerns were brought to our
attention, this matter could have been dealt with
sooner had the person who gave the tape to the media
come to us with his or her concerns,” he noted.
“Now, in addition to investigating this matter, the
district also wants to ensure district policy is
being followed regarding the viewing and duplication
of the surveillance tapes. Most importantly, we want
to make sure all employees understand the importance
of tolerance and know the use of inappropriate
language is not acceptable in our schools or on our
buses,” said Xanthis.
