Three Port Jervis schools make state's
top list
The New York State Department of Education has recognized three
Port Jervis schools as high performing/gap closing schools. Anna
S. Kuhl Elementary School, Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary
School, and Port Jervis High School were included on the list
of high performing schools released by the state May 16. The
schools earned this distinction by meeting all applicable state
English Language Arts (ELA) and math standards for 2006-2007 and
for making adequate yearly progress in ELA and math for
two consecutive years.
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction John Bell said the
designation is a direct reflection of the quality of the
instruction going on in our classrooms. "The state report
reflects the hard work and energy everyone in the district is
putting into improving our educational programs," said Bell. "Congratulations
to our students on your academic success and to all of
those in our schools - from the teachers and teacher aides to
the support staff - for helping our students excel."
This marks the third consecutive year that Hamilton Bicentennial
Elementary School has made the state's high performing list.
Both elementary schools made the list last year.
Bell attributes the schools' success to additional student
support, new textbooks, technology advances, strategic planning,
and stronger curriculum mapping that's aligning content between
grade levels.
