National Honor Society
inducts 24 new members
 |
Twenty-four Port Jervis High
School students recently joined the select group of youths
nationwide who qualified for membership this year in the
National Honor Society. On May
22, a solemn candle-lighting ceremony was held at Port Jervis
High School to induct the new members into the Neversink Chapter
of the nation's premier student organization.
More than just an honor roll, the National Honor Society serves
to recognize outstanding students who have demonstrated
excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and
citizenship.
Membership not only recognizes students for their
accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through
active involvement in school activities and community service.
In addition to raising money each year for the American Cancer
Society and two $500 Port Jervis High School scholarships, every
member of the Neversink Chapter of the National Honor Society
participates in four community service projects each marking
period. These projects include volunteering after-school to
tutor elementary school students and unloading thousands of
pounds of groceries every month at the local food pantry. This
school year, the current members clocked approximately 550 hours
community service working on the various projects.
