A Port Jervis High School Odyssey of
the Mind Team has qualified to compete in the New York State
Tournament after winning first place in its division at the
regional tournament Feb. 25. The students' innovative solution
to the problem, "Large and Small of It," also earned the team
the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award.
Two other Port Jervis teams placed at the
regional tournament - the High School "I'm Only Thinking of You"
team took third and the Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School
"Around the World in Eight Minutes" placed second.
An
international program that promotes creative problem solving,
Odyssey of the Mind challenges students in grades 1 to 12 to
compete in long-term problem solving and spontaneous on-the-spot
brainstorming.
This year,
Port Jervis sent seven teams to the regional competition. All of
the students worked diligently for months to create a solution
to their team's challenging problem. Their hard work paid off.
All of the teams presented solutions that reflected creativity,
ingenuity, and a higher level of thinking at the regional
tournament.
