Healthy meals equal healthy students
Port Jervis
schools participate in the National School Lunch Program, which
regulates and subsidizes the provision of complete,
nutritionally balanced lunches. Menus now include many changes
to reduce fats and increase grains, fruits and vegetables.
Free
Breakfast: All Port
Jervis students are entitled to receive free breakfasts.
Breakfast is provided to elementary school students in their
classrooms. At the High/Middle School, breakfast items are
available for students in their school cafeteria. They also have
the option of purchasing a la carte breakfast items.
Lunch:
Students can purchase a complete lunch including milk, just
milk, or a la carte and snack items. They are also offered the
following alternatives to the daily menu items - peanut butter
and jelly, tuna fish sandwich, and the sandwich of the day.

For the first time in close to
five years, Port Jervis must raise the price of school meals.
Beginning September 2008, lunch prices for the elementary and
secondary school lunch programs will increase by .25 cents. All
students will continue to receive free breakfasts through the
National School Breakfast Program.
The price increase is not unique
to Port Jervis. School lunch programs are fully self-funded and
must cover all costs to include food, supplies, and equipment.
High fuel and food prices are forcing many New York districts to
raise their meal prices this year to meet these expenses. In
light of the new prices, the district wants to remind parents
and guardians that their children may be eligible for free or
reduced-price meals. Please see above for more information.

Applications now available
for 2008-09 school year
The district is urging families to take advantage of the free
and reduced-priced meals available through the National School
Lunch Program. Application packets will be sent home with
students the first day of school. The application can also be
downloaded below.
Those who qualify will be eligible for free or reduced-priced
lunches. The price for reduced meals is just .25 cents.
This could save your family close to $500 a year per child!
Who can get free meals?
Applications for free or reduced-priced lunch may be
completed anytime during the school year when a family’s income
changes.
•
The confidential program is available to all
households that meet
federal income guidelines - and these guidelines are higher
than
you might expect.
•
Students whose families receive food stamps or
other aids such
as TANE, WIC, or HEAP are automatically eligible - regardless of
their income.
•
Most foster children, as well as homeless and migrant children,
are eligible.
Protecting your children's
privacy
- When students go through the lunch line, they carry nothing
that would identify them as a participant in the free and
reduced meal program. They simply enter their student Pin number
into the automated payment system and the cashier automatically
processes the transaction.
Applications
- The completed application should be returned to Food Service
Director Thomas Preiskines. For answers to questions regarding
the application or assistance completing the application, please call Mr. Preiskines at
858-3124.

School cafeterias
receive top health ratings
Port Jervis Middle School and
Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary School cafeterias
are two of the cleanest school cafeterias in Orange
County. According to a 2007 Health Department inspection
report, the Port Jervis cafeterias earned this
distinction by being two of only 15 cafeterias
county-wide to compile unspoiled health inspection
records since January 2005.

New technology automates
student accounts
Technology upgrades improved
the way the food service program does business. With the use of a new
computerized system, Food Service is able to track student
information including account balances and food purchases. Each
student uses a personal Pin number when he or she
purchases meals. By eliminating the old pen and paper tally
sheets, the cafeteria staff can serve students quicker and
more efficiently - reducing the time students spend waiting in
line.
