Capital Project - Phase II |
A new year
- a new look for the High School
After months of extensive renovations, all
Port Jervis schools opened Sept. 3 - ready to
welcome students back for the first day of the
2008-2009 school year.
Over the summer,
Port Jervis Middle School, High School and sections of Anna S. Kuhl
Elementary School were temporarily closed for roof replacements,
facility restorations, security system upgrades, and other
needed building improvements.
The work begin April 18, 2008,
on the second - and final -
phase of the Port Jervis School District’s $14.6 million capital
construction project. The bulk of the projects were completed
over the summer. This included
renovating the high school
cafeteria, replacing roofs, and replacing fire
alarm systems, security systems upgrades, removing and replacing
fuel oil tanks at all Port Jervis schools. The extensive
restoration of the High School auditorium will be completed this
fall - in time for the community to enjoy all of the schools'
winter concerts.

Notice of asbestos removal
During the summer of 2008,
asbestos abatement was performed at ASK Elementary School,
Port Jervis High School, and Port Jervis Middle School.
Abatement protocols on the removal of asbestos and asbestos
containing materials in public schools are very strict.
Precautionary measures to assure safety included, but were not
limited to, completely sealing off the work section from the rest
of the building along with cleaning and testing abatement areas
before reopening that section of the building to the public.

letter sent home to parents that outlines all safety measures.
Phase I the project was completed in
the Summer of 2007.
Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary
School received new roofing, flooring, and a safer, more
energy-efficient entrance; the Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School
library was renovated and expanded; the Middle School student
lockers were refurbished, and the high school tennis courts were
resurfaced.
Restorations address
urgent building needs
The $14.6 million Capital
Projects Referendum was overwhelmingly approved by voters on Dec. 12,
2006, Port Jervis City School District
residents overwhelmingly approved a $14.6
million Capital Projects Referendum.
The restoration projects, which were completed in two phases,
address the district's most urgent building needs. The work is
being funded by State Building Aid and the new EXCEL (Expanding our
Children’s Education and Learning) Aid program.

Anna S. Kuhl Library improvements
Positive changes
also took
place at the ASK Library this summer. New wall-to-wall carpeting was
installed in the library and adjoining computer lab.
The next step was to unpack the cartons and cartons of books,
periodicals, and other reading materials. Plans are now in the
works to provide the Library with wireless internet access.
