Board of Education

A local board of education is an agency of New York State governed by NYS law and the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. The Port Jervis City School District Board of Education has the power to develop policies, rules and regulations for the operation of our school system.

There are nine residents who serve, without pay, on our school board. On the third Tuesday in May, three members are elected on a rotating basis to a three-year term of office. 

School Board Elections
Four of the nine seats on the Port Jervis Board of Education were up for election May 20.  Brandy Nicolette, Roger Kalin, and William Smith were elected to serve three-year terms. Earl Walker, Jr. was elected to serve the one-year balance on the open board seat.

Board of Election reorganized following resignations
Five members of the Board of Education resigned May 21, 2008. The candidates who received the largest number of votes in the May 20 election were appointed to fill the positions at the May 21 board meeting.

Earl Walker, Jr. was appointed by the board to fill the one-year balance on the seat that has been open since December 2007. His term runs through June 30, 2009. Brandy Nicolette, Roger Kalin, William Smith, and Ron Cecchini were appointed to fill four of the seats vacated by Ken Jones, Brendan Hess, Robert Habig, Steven Banks, and Anne Horsham for the remainder of this year’s term, which ends June 30, 2008. On July 1, 2009, Mrs. (Nicolette) Figueroa, Mr. Kalin, and Mr. Smith began their three-year terms. Mr. Cecchini is serving a one-year term, ending May 19, 2009.

In accordance with state law, the school board appointed William Onofry on July 1, 2009, to fill the remaining board seat for one year. Mr. Onofry was selected by the school board from a list of district residents who expressed an interest in the position. His term ends May 19, 2009.
