Overview of
district programs and services
The Port Jervis City School
District has a long history of providing an outstanding
educational environment for its diverse population of students.
Comprised of two elementary schools with 1,674 students, a 7-8
middle school with 537 students, and a 9-12 high school with
1,143 students, the district serves an area of 75 square
miles, encompassing the
City of Port Jervis and
portions of the towns of Deerpark, Mount Hope, Forestburgh,
and Mamakating, New York.
Additionally, the district educates secondary students
from Montague, New Jersey.
Port Jervis has always promoted initiatives to enhance academic
excellence. One of the most recent initiatives is a commitment
to provide technology throughout the district. In addition to
traditional computer labs, SmartBoard technology, AlphaSmart
computer interface, and mobile wireless labs are available in
the schools. The entire district is connected to a wide-area
network that connects each classroom to the Internet via a fiber
optic ring. This enables teachers to input grades, IEP goals,
and objectives from their home or classroom computer directly to
guidance. Other recent achievements aimed toward improving the
quality of instruction and student performance include a quality
teacher in-service program and the introduction of inclusionary
teaching models. This includes a series of workshops has been
designed to specifically address the needs of new teachers.
Additionally, the district is undergoing a
capital building project to alleviate space constraints, while
actively pursuing a class-size reduction program in grades K-3.
In order to help students meet the demands of the New York State
assessments, the district provided academic assistance programs
for at-risk students prior to the current state mandates.
Data shows that the district
initiatives are working. Student performance across the district
is improving.
The district has also made a commitment to student recognition
programs. High levels of academic performance, character, and
community responsibility are expected and rewarded.
