The decision to delay the opening of school, dismiss early, or close school for the day due to weather conditions is never an easy one. Our priority is always the safety of the children. When Port Jervis is forced to close or delay schools or to dismiss students early due to inclement weather or other emergency conditions, that information is reported here, on the district web site, and on local radio and television stations. Parents are asked to please try avoid calling the school offices for this information since it is important to keep phone lines free in case of emergency.

Automated emergency communications system
The District has another way to notify Port families about snow days, two-hour delays, early dismissals, and other important school matters. The new communications system, called Connect-Ed, allows the district to automatically call or email all of the 3,400-plus contacts in its SchoolTool student information system. The new system was tested Nov 3. All student households should have received an automated telephone message. Parents who did not receive a call, or would like to receive future messages at more than one phone number, should call their child's school.

Have a plan for early dismissals
When there's an early dismissal due to bad weather, high school students are released first, followed by middle school and then elementary students. No matter what grade level your children are, parents are reminded to make sure that all school-age children know what to do in case of an early dismissal.

Make arrangements with a sitter, neighbor, friend, or relative who can be called on in such situations - and review your plans with your children on a regular basis.
