Mrs. Raap
publishes novel - HBE is setting for story
Carly
Sage has crossed the threshold into sixth grade at Hamilton
Bicentennial Elementary School. But you won’t find the
11-year-old on any class roster. She’s the inspirational
character in the coming-of-age novel written by Port Jervis
elementary teacher Kara Raap.
The
Adventures of Carly Sage is the story of a small town girl,
who learns much about herself and her classmates as she
struggles through the ups and downs of adolescence and overcomes
a difficult situation. Raap says she wanted to give her students
a story that was inspirational, taught valuable lessons, and
resonated with their own lives.

Lasers
light up HBE
The PTA treated HBE students to a very special laser light show
in our gym. Not only was the show fun and exciting, it was also
an opportunity for students to learn about LASERs - the acronym
for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
Sixth graders
present high-tech presentations
On
January 9, students in Judy Dawson and LeAnne Hubbard's class
demonstrated their amazing technology skills at a special parent
presentation on Greece. The students treated the packed house to
a tour of ancient Greece through individual power point slides
and other forms of technology. All of the information was
researched by the students.

Fourth graders
demonstrate Bucket-Filling spirit
The
fourth graders in Emily Mesnick's class displayed their
remarkable generosity by collecting supplies for the Port Jervis
Humane Society and an underprivileged school in Belize. All
together, the class brought in 42 pounds of dog and cat food, 12
cans, and two boxes of treats for the humane society; and 23
boxes of crayons, 18 Glue sticks, 13 notebooks, 20 children's
books, 4 bottles of glue, 14 coloring books, 62 erasers, 29
sharpeners, 10 pens, and over 200 pencils for the school in
Belize. What an amazing class!
Students
wish everyone Happy Holidays! Their
stockings are hung from the chimney
with care! Students in Victoria Sickler and
Angela Becker's class are wishing you happy
holidays from their toasty classroom fireplace.
Sixth graders spread holiday cheer to seniors
On
December 16, HBE sixth graders brought some holiday cheer to
residents at Bon Secours Hospital. As part of the school's
Community Connections program, guidance counselor Dawn Jones
brings a different group of students each month to work with
senior citizens in the assisted living facility. The holiday
spirit was absolutely contagious this year!
Students learn to
Begin with the End in Mind
First
graders in Kim Malzahn's class discovered the true meaning
behind Habit #2: Beginning with the end in mind. With the help
of their student teacher, Mrs. Convery, students tried to put a
puzzle together upside down, without even looking at the box!
Once they discovered how difficult this task was, they were
allowed to turn over their puzzle pieces and look at the box for
assistance. Mrs. Malzahn and Mrs. Convery explained how
important it is to have a plan when you take on any task. The
second approach was much easier because the students knew what
to look for. They were truly beginning with the end in mind.
Fourth graders
experience Colonial life
Every year, HBE fourth graders get to take a field trip back in
time. With the help of "Colonial Man" Sam Ladley, this year's
students learned how to make wax candles and write with quill
pens. What a fun way to learn about life before iPods and video
games!
First Quarter Honor Roll
Congratulations to all of the students in grades 4 to 6 who
qualified for the
First Marking Period Honor Roll.
HBE students celebrate
Thanksgiving
Students
had fun learning about the history of Thanksgiving. On Nov. 17,
the Kindergarten and first grade classes dressing up as Pilgrims
and Native Americans for our school's annual Thanksgiving feast.
Special thanks to the lunch ladies for the delicious meal with
all of the holiday fixings! Other classes also dressed the part.
Students in Victoria Sickler's class are pictured wearing the
beautiful Native American headdresses they made with the
assistance of teacher aid Angela Beckerclass.
Rotary gives third graders gift of knowledge
Members
of the Port Jervis Rotary
Club came to Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary School Oct. 28,
bearing gifts. Every third grade student in our school received
their very own copy of the special edition Webster's Dictionary. The
Dictionary Project was brought to Port Jervis 10 years ago by
Roy Hinshalwood and his wife, Sophia. The success of the Port
Jervis program has prompted Rotary clubs across the state of New
York to participate in the youth-orientated project. Thank you Rotary!
Kindergarteners are community helpers
Elizabeth
Polanis' kindergarten class was filled recently with
firefighters, teachers, police officers, farmers, and more!
Students dressed up to learn about the important roles these
people play in a community.
Hands-on science experiment awes students
Second
graders in Lori Kuroski and Cori Jashembowski's class had an
exciting lesson in biology. Students spent the afternoon
dissecting owl pellets after an in-depth lesson on these birds
and their digestive systems. Students were awed by their
discoveries!
Kindergarten class makes robots
Michelle
Thiele and Beth Derkacz's
class had a wonderful time learning
all about shapes, colors and the letter "r" - all while
following directions!
They were able to create their own
Ron the Robot.
»Happy
Birthday Johnny Appleseed!
Students from Melissa Haight's class, with the help of their classroom aide
Nancy
Farr and lots of parents, created delicious apple pies, apple
cobbler and applesauce to celebrate Johnny Appleseed's Birthday.
The
parents came into the class Sept. 26 to help the children
prepare the food. That afternoon, they celebrated held a
birthday party - and enjoyed the yummy apples dishes - in Johnny
Appleseed's honor.
Second grade
students were busy peeling away...After learning about
different types of apples, they learned how to make applesauce
from scratch. What a yummy way to learn about fall harvesting
and celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday!
