Operation Safe
Child
Orange County Sheriff's Office offering free
Safe Child ID cards

| Orange County
Sheriff's Office Investigator Brian Manning and
Confidential Secretary Jacki DeChiara fingerprinted
students for the Operation Safe Child Program. |
The Orange County Sheriff's Office ID unit spent
the day recently photographing and fingerprinting students for
its new Operation Safe Child Program.
Using information gathered during their visit -
students' fingerprints, basic biological information, and
photographs - the Sheriff's Office team created a free Safe
Child ID card for each student. The cards were given to parents
and guardians for safekeeping.
With the parents' permission, the
digitally-recorded information was also stored on a database at
the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) where it can
be used in conjunction with the New York Sate Amber Alert and
Missing Child Alert programs. In the event DCJS receives a
missing child report on any child in the program, critical
information in the child's file will be electronically
disseminated, statewide if necessary, within minutes -
dramatically increasing the possibility of bringing a missing
child home.
The new Safe Child ID Card program is being offered
free-of-charge to all parents in Orange County. Parents can
obtain an ID card for their children by visiting the Sherrif's
Office, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or by calling
845-294-1590 or 845-291-7900 to schedule the ID unit to register
children at your school or child-based event.
