»Families needed to host exchange students
The Port Jervis Rotary Club still needs families to host international exchange students this fall. Each family in the program hosts a student, who will attend Port Jervis High School, for three or four months. The student then moves to another host family. Host families provide routine care for the student, “like one of their own,” including meals, room, laundry, supervision and local transportation. Students receive a monthly stipend for lunches and expenses. The Rotary Club provides occasional weekend events and activities, and assistance to host families, when needed. This program also makes it possible for a local student to go abroad for a year. For more information, or to apply, please contact Jack Austin at 856-0706 or 291-2830, or Patty Niosi at 856-3330.

A federal grant enabled two Port Jervis social studies teachers to attend in an intensive graduate level American history course at Cornell University this summer. Aumick says the highlight of the course was a lecture by a well-known author and Lincoln expert Harold Holzer. The Teaching America History Grant program is designed to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge and understanding of and appreciation for traditional U.S. history.
