»Student
parking lot now one-way for all drivers
In an effort to improve campus safety, the high school student
parking lot is now a one-way traffic area. New road signs and
directional arrows were installed over the summer to designate
the new one-way entrance to the parking area. Access to the
parking lot is limited to students in grades 11 and 12 who have
completed the driver safety requirements. Special thanks to the
Port Jervis High School SADD for sponsoring the improved safety
improvement plan and donating the new Port Jervis High School "Drive
Safely" sign.
»Families
needed to host exchange students
The Port Jervis Rotary Club still
needs families to host international exchange students this
fall. Each family in the program hosts a student, who will
attend Port Jervis High School, for three or four months. The
student then moves to another host family. Host families provide
routine care for the student, “like one of their own,” including
meals, room, laundry, supervision and local transportation.
Students receive a monthly stipend for lunches and expenses. The
Rotary Club provides occasional weekend events and activities,
and assistance to host families, when needed. This program also
makes it possible for a local student to go abroad for a year.
For more information, or to apply, please contact Jack Austin at
856-0706 or 291-2830, or Patty Niosi at 856-3330.

»Grant allows
teachers to attend Cornell course
A federal grant enabled two Port
Jervis social studies teachers to attend in an intensive
graduate level American history course at Cornell University
this summer. Trish Aumick and Ally Cunningham were two of 18
teachers from Orange and Sullivan Counties who spent one week at
Cornell studying post-Civil War history. Aumick says the
highlight of the course was a lecture by a well-known author and
Lincoln expert Harold Holzer. The Teaching America History Grant
program is designed to raise student achievement by improving
teachers' knowledge and understanding of and appreciation for
traditional U.S. history.
