Financial Aid Night is Dec. 9
Financial Aid Night is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 9 at
6
p.m. in the High School cafeteria. Michael Fraher, director
of Financial Aid at Vassar College, will present this year's
program. The snow date is Wednesday, Dec. 10 - same
time/place. All junior, seniors and their parents are encouraged
to attend.

celebrate the first Thanksgiving
Students in Maura Brady-Wilson’s
third grade at ASK Elementary School have been learning about
the first Thanksgiving. In honor of the Pilgrims, they made
Pilgrim hat cookies.

Rotary gives
students the gift of knowledge
For the
seventh consecutive year, the Port Jervis Rotary Club has given all third
graders in the district their very own
copy of the “Webster” dictionary. On November 21, a group of Port Jervis Rotarians visited Anna S. Kuhl
and Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary Schools to personally
present the dictionaries to the students.

Butler receives
full scholarship to Newberry
Port Jervis
High School senior Steven Butler signed a letter of intent to
wrestle at Newberry College on a full scholarship.
Butler, who has a 95-15 career record, was awarded a $29,000
annual scholarship to represent
the Division II South Carolina college. The Red
Raider football standout will also play for Newberry's football
team.

BOE approves
privatization of five bus runs
The Port Jervis School
District Board of Education ratified a negotiated agreement
between the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and the
Port Jervis School District on Nov. 6 that will allow the
district to request bids from private bus companies for a
minimum of five of its transportation runs.

Class
ignites interest in energy alternatives
High
School teacher Tracy West-Barnes is taking an out-of-the
box approach to teaching her technology students about
alternative energy. Students are actively engaged in a
projects ranging from
building a solar car and a solar-powered heater to
visiting a nuclear power plant. Read more about the

national election
Middle School holds mock presidential election
The Middle School held a
school election for the office of the President of the
United States on Nov. 3. Turnout was high with of 74
percent of the student body voting. Senator Barack Obama
won the election with 191 votes, 59 percent of the
students. Senator John McCain received 99 votes.

Port Hall of Fame will honor outstanding alumni
Port Jervis High School is creating an Alumni Hall of Fame
to honor all who have used their Port degrees as a springboard to
success in their professional lives. The first inductees will be
honored in the Fall of 2009.

PJHS celebrates arrival
of exchange student
The High School foreign language
department, along with the French, Spanish and Interact clubs,
celebrated the arrival of Taiwanese exchange student, Susan
Chen, by holding a special reception. Chen is attending Port
Jervis High School this year through the Rotary International
Youth Exchange Program.

Health officials urge
children to get flu vaccine
Flu season is on its
way and, for the first time, health officials are recommending
all children, ages 6 months to 18 years, get vaccinated. Each
year, about 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 people are
hospitalized in the United States due to influenza and its
complications.
