Standards-Based Report Cards Guide and Information

New Report Cards for 2015-16

The Port Jervis School District is pleased to present a new elementary school Report Card for the 2015-16 school year.  The Standards-Based Report Card replaces a grading system that is over 35 years old.  The new system allows for more better communictation between teacher and parent on the learning progress of their children.

The quest for a new report card was spearheaded by our elementary teachers due to dissatisfaction with our current 35 year old report card. They found that our report cards do not reflect accurately nor communicate effectively with parents what our students are learning and how they are progressing toward meeting the current learning standards. The goal was to generate a standards-based report card that clearly communicates with parents and is written in a parent friendly manner.

Port Jervis elementary teachers have been working diligently for almost two years to meet that goal. The new report cards are now ready to roll out for the 2015-2016 school year. This has been a monumental undertaking and will be a huge change for everyone; teachers, students and parents. This is a change that has been a long time coming and will benefit our students greatly. The new grading guidelines are intended to provide parents and students with information that presents a truer picture of a student’s proficiency and information about what specifically was learned based on grade level standards. The standards provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade in order to be prepared for college and career opportunities.

Standards-Based grading is very different from the traditional grading that we are used to. Please be patient, it will take time to for students, teachers and parents to become comfortable with this change. Always keep in mind that our goal is to provide accurate information to parents about their student’s achievement.

Successful implementation of our new report cards demand a close working relationship and support between our teachers and parents. Parents cannot do it alone and teachers cannot do it without parental support.

This web page is designed to offer parents information about the transition to our new grading system and report cards. In addition, our teachers are available to help parents with this transition and to offer assistance how to help your child be successful. We will be offering on-going information and updates on our website as well as Parent Involvement nights for parental support. We know that when parents are involved in their child’s education they do better in school.
